pic_left_project_infoMs. Stephanie Bennett and Mr. Earl Binder, the people behind this project, put a call out for interested students to be a part of their vision. A group of fifteen willing and eager students got to work right away with a plan to see this vision become a reality. The goal of $40,000 was daunting, but the students were determined.

They decided to:
  • make flyers detailing the project to distribute throughout the community.
  • hold an open house to raise awareness and promote the project. They invited speakers such as Cochrane's mayor, Judy Stewart, representatives from the school division, and spoke-persons from their sponsors.
  • put an ad in the local newspaper to advertise the open house.
  • apply for government grants to help reach the target amount.
The community came through and the group was able to raise more than their target in just over four months. The installation was planned for summer 2004, but there was still a lot of work to be done. In order to prepare for the installation, they had to apply for an electrical permit in order to bring the electricity into the school, get an engineer's report to ensure the roof could support the weight of the panels, and plan how to anchor the panels to the roof.

On July 30, 2004, Cochrane High's sustainable development committee watched as thirty solar panels were put onto the roof of their school.

The wind turbine was added October 20, 2004
